When it comes to pets, accidents can happen in the blink of an eye — and sometimes, those accidents lead to serious injuries like joint dislocation. Recently, we treated a brave feline named Frankie, who came in after taking quite a knock to his hip. Here’s what happened — and what you should know if your own pet ever faces a similar emergency.
Frankie’s Story: A Tough Break for a Tough Cat
Frankie’s hip had suffered a dorso-cranial luxation of his coxo-femoral joint — in simpler terms, his hip joint had dislocated and shifted upward and forward from its normal position. This type of injury can be very painful and requires urgent care.
We first attempted a closed reduction, where the joint is manually guided back into place without surgery. Unfortunately, Frankie’s hip was too unstable to keep in position using a sling or harness alone.
To ensure the best outcome, we proceeded with a surgical (open) reduction, securing the joint and repairing the joint capsule with sutures. Thanks to prompt treatment, Frankie is now on the mend — and already showing signs of his playful self again!
What Causes Joint Dislocation in Pets?
Dislocations can happen due to:
Trauma (falls, car accidents, rough play)
Congenital issues (especially in certain dog breeds)
Underlying joint weakness or hip dysplasia
Symptoms to Watch For:
Sudden limping or inability to bear weight
Swelling or pain around a joint
Holding a limb at an odd angl
Whining, hiding, or signs of distress
If you ever notice these symptoms, don’t delay — dislocations can become worse or lead to permanent damage without treatment.
How We Treat It
Depending on the severity and location, vets may recommend:
Closed reduction under sedation
Surgical repair (open reduction), especially if the joint is unstable or repeatedly dislocates
Post-op care including rest, anti-inflammatories, and follow-up exams
Each case is different — which is why a professional assessment is crucial.
