As pet owners, we all wish our furry companions could simply tell us when something’s wrong. But unlike humans, animals are experts at hiding pain—often until it becomes serious. That’s why it’s so important to know the subtle signs that could indicate discomfort or illness.
At Fynbos Animal Hospital, we believe early detection can make all the difference. Here are some key signs to look out for:
- Changes in Eating or Drinking Habits
A sudden loss of appetite or an increase in thirst may be your first clue. Pets in pain might eat less, chew differently, or even avoid their food bowls altogether. - Unusual Behavior
Is your usually friendly dog suddenly withdrawn? Is your playful cat hiding or acting irritated? Changes in mood or interaction can be a clear sign that something’s off. - Limping or Stiff Movement
Limping, avoiding stairs, or hesitation to jump or run might point to joint pain, injury, or arthritis—even in younger animals. - Grooming Changes
Pets in pain may lick, chew, or scratch at one area excessively. On the other hand, a pet that stops grooming altogether (especially cats) may also be feeling unwell. - Posture and Body Language
A hunched back, tail tucked between the legs, or unusual resting positions could mean your pet is uncomfortable. Also watch for trembling or excessive panting when it’s not hot. - Vocalisation
Whining, growling, whimpering, or increased meowing can all be signs of distress—especially when they occur suddenly or seem out of character.
When Should You Call the Vet?
If your pet is showing any of these signs for more than a day, or if symptoms seem to worsen, it’s time to get them checked. A quick exam could prevent something small from becoming serious.
Your pet’s comfort and health are our top priority. If you’re ever unsure, rather be safe than sorry—give us a call or book a check-up with our caring team.
