Persian cats we know today emerged in Britain in the 19th century as a result of the cross between the purebred Persian cat from ancient Persia (now Iran) and the white Turkish angora. From this mixture was obtained a feline of softer fur and that could be of more colours than the original.

Silver and gold are extremely popular colours for Persians. They are considered exquisite and rare and come in two different variants: Chinchilla—white with black tips. Shaded—uniform black shading over the darker parts.
Persians are predisposed to polycystic kidney disease (inherited), dermatophytosis, periodontal disease, nonhealing corneal ulcers, hair coat disorders, overgrown nails and eye discharge.
