In some countries obese pets are becoming an epidemic. Obesity is associated with joint disease, diabetes mellitus, respiratory problems and decreased life span. Over weight animals experience greater forces across their joints which contribute to arthritis and degenerative joint disease. This leads to decreased mobility which then contributes to further obesity. As pets are reliant on humans for their food they are unable to regulate their food intake. This is why regular weighing and feeding according to instructions on their bag of food is so important. Consider measuring their food with a gram scale (kitchen scale) rather than a measuring cup.
Also feeding in meals rather from a feeder also sensitizes their cells to the function of insulin and stimulates their metabolism. Furthermore feeding a diet containing L-carnitine will aid fat metabolism, weight loss, lean muscle and cardiac health. Let’s move the focus from cure to prevention.
