Hemorrhagic gastroenteritis (HGE)

Hemorrhagic gastroenteritis (HGE) or more recently Acute Hemorrhagic Diarrhea Syndrome (AHDS) is a disease most commonly of young adult dogs characterized by sudden vomiting and bloody diarrhea due to inflammation of the stomach and or the intestines with bleeding. Symptoms are severe and can be fatal if untreated due to dehydration and shock. It occurs in any breed, but especially small dogs such as the Toy Poodle and Miniature Schnauzer. It seems to begin with infection from an intestinal bacterium called Clostridium perfringens Type A or a Type 1 Hypersensitivity reaction to dietary components.
