Post-treatment care at home

Rest and comfort support recovery after procedures

Recovery does not end when your pet leaves the clinic. What happens at home plays a major role in healing, comfort, and long-term results. Structured aftercare reduces complications and supports faster recovery.

Create a calm recovery space
Your pet needs a quiet, clean area away from noise and activity. Limit movement, especially after surgery or sedation. Use soft bedding and ensure the space is warm and secure. Restrict access to stairs, slippery floors, and outdoor areas if advised.

Monitor eating and drinking
Appetite may be reduced for the first 24 hours after certain procedures. Offer small portions of food and ensure fresh water is available. If your pet refuses food for more than a day, vomits repeatedly, or appears weak, contact your veterinarian.

Follow medication instructions carefully
Administer medication exactly as prescribed. Complete the full course of antibiotics or pain relief even if your pet appears better. Skipping doses can delay healing and increase risk of infection.

Check the surgical site
Inspect the wound daily for swelling, discharge, redness, or excessive licking. A small amount of mild swelling can be normal, but discharge, bleeding, or foul odour requires immediate attention. Use protective collars if recommended to prevent interference.

Limit physical activity
Even if your pet seems energetic, internal healing takes time. Controlled movement prevents strain on stitches or internal tissues. Follow your vet’s timeline before allowing full exercise.

Watch for behavioural changes
Lethargy beyond expected recovery time, excessive panting, shaking, or signs of pain should not be ignored. Early communication with your vet prevents complications.

Why structured aftercare matters
Research shows that controlled rest and proper wound management significantly reduce post-operative complications. Calm environments reduce stress hormones, which positively affects healing. Recovery is a process that requires consistency and observation.

Professional support continues
If you are unsure about any aspect of recovery, contact your veterinary team. Clear communication ensures safe healing and peace of mind.
