How to Know If Your Pet Is in Pain (Even When They Don’t Show It)

Animals are experts at hiding pain — it’s in their instincts. But as pet owners, it’s important to recognise the subtle signs that something might not be right.

Here are 5 common signs your dog or cat could be in pain:

  1. Changes in appetite
If your pet suddenly stops eating or seems uninterested in food, this could signal discomfort or internal pain.
  2. Unusual behaviour
Is your normally friendly pet hiding, growling, or avoiding touch? Behaviour changes are often the first clue.
  3. Limping or stiffness
Lameness or hesitating to jump, climb stairs, or walk can point to joint or muscle pain.
  4. Licking or biting a specific area
Pets often try to soothe painful spots by licking or biting them repeatedly.
  5. Vocalising more than usual
Whining, meowing, growling, or even purring more than normal (in cats) can sometimes indicate discomfort.

What to do:
If you notice any of these signs, don’t wait for it to get worse. Bring your pet in for a check-up. Early detection leads to faster relief and better long-term health.
