Why Your Pet Still Needs Parasite Protection in Winter

When the weather cools down, it’s tempting to assume that fleas, ticks, and worms are no longer a concern. Unfortunately, that’s not true. Many parasites survive — and even thrive — during the colder months, especially in our homes or milder climates like we have here.

At Fynbos Animal Hospital, we often see pet owners pause parasite prevention during winter. But the risks don’t take a holiday — and neither should your pet’s protection.

So, what parasites are active in winter?
Fleas
Fleas love warmth and humidity. If they find a cosy spot in your home — like bedding, carpets, or behind furniture — they can complete their entire life cycle indoors, unaffected by the weather outside.

Ticks
Some tick species are surprisingly cold-tolerant. They hide in sheltered outdoor areas like leaf litter, woodpiles, or under decks and become active on warmer winter days. If your pet still goes for walks or plays outside, ticks can easily latch on.

Worms
Intestinal worms like roundworms and hookworms aren’t influenced by cold the same way as external parasites. Pets can contract them from soil, feces, or other animals, all year round.

Why year-round prevention is so important
Parasite infestations can happen indoors
Health risks include skin infections, allergies, anaemia, digestive upset, and even organ damage
Fleas and worms can be transmitted to humans, especially children and elderly family members

Even pets that don’t go outside often are still at risk — humans can unknowingly bring parasites into the home on clothing or shoes.
